Sporting Clay Shoot

NEW FUN! The Flying Rabbit, in Mt. Crawford, has offered to host a sporting clay tournament to benefit MCC through the Va. Mennonite Relief Sale. This location has a five-acre course, sixteen stations and birds break at any point, just like when hunting.

The cost is $50 for a 100 shot round. A portion of this entry fee will be given to the Va. Relief Sale and sent on to MCC for their use in relief efforts around the world.

You may shoot and log your score for this tournament between September 29 and October 2, 1:30pm. Awards will be given to the church with the most participants as well as for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class finishers in each class.

Please print, complete the registration form and mail to the Flying Rabbit. Reservations are requested but not required. If you are traveling from out of the area there will be guns available for a $5 rental fee. (click for registration form)

All participants will receive a coupon for the Saturday plate lunch at the Fairgrounds, your choice of chicken bbq or pork tenderloin. For more information about the Flying Rabbit, check out the website. www.flyingrabbitsportingclays.net

Penny Power

Penny Power is a fun and easy way to raise money for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and Virginia Mennonite Missions (VMM) by collecting coins in a container in your church, Christian school, home or business. Bring the coins to the Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale by 9 a.m. on October 2. The coins are then sorted by volunteers and staff from the Park View Federal Credit Union, who calculate the total
value of each congregation’s coins based on weight. Currency and checks are also welcome.

Where does the money go?
The money raised will be divided equally between Mennonite Central Committee and Virginia Mennonite Missions. The money MCC receives will support the Global Family Program, which helps support children through community-based education sponsorship, student scholarships, nutritious lunches, library materials, school supplies, school fees and more. VMM will use its portion of the money to support two projects: a week-long event in Italy called “Happy Week” which teaches children about God in a variety of ways in a loving, action and fun-filled setting. The other half will support the Joshua Center in Albania, which provides a nurturing place for young children to learn about God and learn life skills like hygiene and good manners.

How do we get started?
Tape the enclosed label onto a jug, jar or can. Blue water jugs are the most popular option, and can be picked up at Virginia Mennonite Missions, 901 Parkwood Drive, Harrisonburg, Va. Place promotional materials in a prominent spot in your church or organization near the jug(s). Then simply drop your coins into the container and watch it fill up!

Our goal is to raise $35,000 for this year’s Penny Power projects. In 2009, congregations and individuals contributed a total of approximately $24,000. Visit www.vmmissions.org/pennypower/ to see your congregation’s total from 2009. Consider matching the amount of your church’s contribution. This is a great incentive for people to drop lots of coins in the Penny Power jug. Checks should be made payable to “Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale,” designated for Penny Power 2010. Bring your checks to the Penny Power table at the sale, or if sent after the sale, via mail (made out to VMM, specify Penny Power).

Here are just a few creative ideas:
• Designate Penny Power as the offering project for Vacation Bible School.
• Give all or part of the money from a church fund-raiser to Penny Power.
• Highlight Penny Power during your Sunday morning worship service. This could be every Sunday or just once a month. One church sings a special song during this time.
• Have children fill a small container with coins at home, then give them a reward for each full container of coins they bring to church.
• Borrow “Rhythm of Change: What can you do for Penny Power?” a 4-minute DVD from VMM for more information about Penny Power.
