The Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale, to which over 1,000 people donate time, is held annually on the first Saturday in October. It began on the Wenger farm in Augusta County 1967 and expanded to Augusta Expoland in 1974. The Relief Sale moved to the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in 1999. Since 1967, $3,317,781 has been raised for world relief. In 2004 the sale raised $173,000 for Mennonite Central Committee.
Relief sales are organized by Mennonites in communities across North America as a special way to raise funds for needy people around the world.
Last year 43 sales were held in the United States and Canada, each with it's own flavor depending on the heritage of Mennonites in that area. The sales raised over $5.4 million US/$6.3 million in 2006, which was channeled to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), the cooperative relief and service agency of 15 Mennonite church groups in North America. An average of 85% of the money raised was sent to the field.
MCC has more than 1,400 persons in service in 60 countries around the world and throughout North America. They work in agriculture, community development, education, peace concerns, economic/technical development, health and social services.
